I am thrilled to get the opportunity to look for the potential 80% of missing genetic predisposition for childhood cancer

Paediatric carcinogenesis is dissimilar to that in adults, due to the short exposure time to environmental carcinogenic factor. Genetics is therefore expected to play a larger role in why some children develop cancer. Despite this assumption, very little is known about genetic predisposition for childhood cancer, with only about 1 in 5 of cases explained by known predisposition gene. Thanks to the Grasshopper Consortium I am thrilled to get the opportunity to look for the potential 80% of missing genetic predisposition together with some of the outstanding bioinformatics colleagues at Hopp Children’s Cancer Center Heidelberg (KiTZ) for four months as part of my Ph.D. project in cancer predisposition at Rigshospitalet.

This project has a great potential for identifying genetic markers for development of new drugs, cancer screening and tailoring both new and existing therapies to the patients need.
