Building Bridges in Science: Grasshopper’s First In-Person Initiation Day

Newcastle, 27 March 2025
The bridges of Newcastle are more than impressive feats of engineering — they stand as powerful symbols of connection, engagement, and progress. Spanning the River Tyne, each bridge tells a unique story of innovation and unity, linking communities, ideas, and generations. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting location to host our very first in-person Grasshopper Initiation Day.

The Grasshopper project is a vibrant, multidisciplinary network of experts committed to accelerating access to innovative cancer treatments for children. By facilitating the exchange of academic staff between research institutions and industry partners, Grasshopper aims to bridge the critical gap between scientific discovery and clinical application.

On the program were several key elements:

  • The launch of the first Calls and guidance on How to Apply
  • An introduction to the Education and Mentoring Programme within Grasshopper

But the highlight of the day was undoubtedly the Mix & Match session with our consortium partners. The Grasshopper consortium brings together 18 diverse partners, and what better way to get to know each other than through a speed-date format — allowing everyone to ask questions, share strengths, and explore what each institution can offer or needs in the field of paediatric cancer research.

By the end of the session, it was clear: connections had been made, ideas exchanged, and the seeds of future collaborations already planted. After the Mix & Match, there was time to address practical matters, and participants had ample opportunity to ask questions to the coordinating team.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended this energizing and inspiring meeting. Let’s carry forward the spirit of Newcastle:

Together, we move forward — bridging borders, ideas, and lives — to bring hope to young patients across the globe.
